Hishaku

Hishaku, or hishaku, is a traditional Japanese ladle used in the Matcha tea ceremony. It is made of bamboo and can be recognised by its characteristic long handle with a knob in the centre. This handle measures about 40 cm.

Hishaku can take many forms. Different types of ladles are therefore part of different rituals and their use also varies according to the season. The scoops also vary in size.

The smaller ones are used to scoop water from teapots. The larger ladles are placed in front of the entrance to the tea room. These larger scoops are placed over the stone tsukubai tanks. They are used for ritual cleansing of the hands.

It is also interesting to note that in the tea ceremony of chanoju, this ladle, along with the tea towel, is meant to look brand new.
