Everyone is sick from time to time, either because of illness or because of not very appropriate behaviour towards oneself. Often these ailments do not need to be addressed directly with a doctor, especially if it is nothing serious.

Sometimes suitable herbs, such as burdock, can take the thorn out of your side.

European herbs

In case you have never heard of borage, it is one of the most widely used herbs in the world. Everyone should have it in their home at least in small amounts for uncle episode. From burdock it is possible to make a tea, as well as a functional gargle or healing poultice.

It can also be used in aromatic baths, which will relax your body and calm your mind much better than without it.

It is not a novelty of the last decades, but burdock is a proven medicine that has been used extensively since antiquity. It has a very positive effect on cell metabolism and can fight inflammatory processes in the body.

It contains a whole host of useful medicinal substances. Thanks to this, it can work both on its own and as part of herbal mixtures. What’s more, pregnant and breastfeeding women can also be treated with burdock. It is not dangerous when used correctly.

Specifications of Burdock

As far as medicine is concerned, the most valuable is the stem. It is normally harvested during the summer holidays, from July to the end of August.

It is particularly interesting because it contains a considerable amount of various organic acids such as nicotinic, silicic and ascorbic acids. These can have a very positive effect on the human body.

But these are not the only medicinal substances that can be found in the plant.

Even iron, chloroform or flavonoids are important for the body and the beetroot extract contains a large amount of them.

If you want to go foraging, you should look mainly on the edges of forests or in grasslands. The herb usually grows most often in these places, but its occurrence in other environments is not excluded.

It is not, however, that common.

Identification of burdock is not as easy as with some other types of herbs. In particular, it is often deceptive in its height, which can be as little as thirty centimetres or as much as less than a metre. The stem is branched and has hairs on the surface.

Home growing

Rather than picking it from all over the place, it is better to grow it in your own garden. As it is a relatively undemanding herb, no special conditions need to be prepared for it. The soil can be practically any, it will take hold anywhere.

The seeds can be bought, but you can just as easily get them by picking the rape in the countryside.

Even better than planting seeds is planting a few seedlings. Not only will the plant grow much earlier, but the flowers from the seedlings will also produce seeds spontaneously when they mature, allowing the beetroot to continue to spread in your garden without your help.

How to use it properly?

Due to its high content of medicinal substances, there are actually many ways to use rape in medicine. It is really highly versatile.

It is suitable for gallbladder or liver problems. It has a maximum detoxifying effect, which these organs like very much. However, it is no secret that this herb is also used to reduce bad cholesterol in the body.

Marigold can also be appreciated by many cardiac patients who find it helpful due to the fact that it is a diuretic herb.

It is also a suitable adjunct treatment for upper and lower respiratory tract inflammation. It can have a positive effect on the vocal cords and thus eliminate any persistent hoarseness. It can also be used in tuberculosis or catarrh of the lungs.

It can also be given in cases of diarrhea, which it can stop quite effectively. Much depends on what exactly caused the diarrhea, as it is not a disease but a symptom.

How to make a tea from burdock?

Unlike other herbs, there are two ways to prepare burdock tea. The first way achieves a weaker effect, while the second way can extract the maximum amount of medicinal substances from beetroot.

The weaker tea is prepared in the classic way. Firstly, you need to wash the beetroot thoroughly and then pour boiling water over it. The herb is then left to infuse for about fifteen minutes.

Then strain and you can sip the resulting product in small sips.

For a stronger decoction, wash the beetroot, put it in a container and pour cold water over it. Bring it to the boil and let it simmer for about three minutes. Then turn off the stove and let the decoction stand for at least another quarter of an hour.

Does burdock have side effects

It’s true that just about all herbs can have some side effects, and burdock is no exception. However, these are quite marginal problems, which, moreover, occur only very rarely in humans.

With internal use, virtually no problems have been reported.

These may occur when the burdock is applied to dry or hypersensitive skin. In this case, it may cause redness sometimes turning into a rash. However, this is not a serious problem, but rather an annoyance that disappears quite quickly after washing the skin thoroughly.
